Mōtsū-ji

Mōtsū-ji is a Tendai Buddhist temple at Hiraizumi in Iwate prefecture, northern Japan, founded according to tradition in 850 and rebuilt on a grand scale by Fujiwara no Motohira and Hidehira in the 12th century. Its great halls were later lost to fire, but its Pure Land garden, centred on a large pond, survives as one of the finest gardens of the Heian period and is part of the Hiraizumi World Heritage Site.
