Namdev

c. 1270–1350 · 14th century · Also known as Namdeo, Namadeva

Namdev was a Marathi poet-saint of the Varkari tradition and a devotee of the god Vithoba of Pandharpur; tradition dates his life to 1270–1350, but scholars have proposed dates from the 13th to the 15th century. Born into a caste of tailors, he composed simply worded songs of praise and taught that all could be saved by devotion, without regard to caste. His companions in worship included Gora, a potter, Janabai, a maid, and Chokhamela, of a caste treated as untouchable. Sixty-one songs under his name are in the Adi Granth, the Sikh scripture.
