National Policy
The National Policy was the economic programme introduced by John A. Macdonald's Conservative government in Canada in 1879. It combined high protective tariffs on imported manufactures, the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and settlement of the western prairies, so that the industries of Ontario and Quebec would supply a national market. Tariff protection remained central to Canadian policy for decades.
