Naxalites

1967– · 20th century · Also known as Naxalite movement

The Naxalites are Maoist communist insurgents in India, named after the village of Naxalbari in West Bengal, where a peasant uprising broke out in 1967. Inspired by Mao Zedong's doctrine of rural people's war, the movement split into many factions; the largest, the Communist Party of India (Maoist), formed in 2004, fought a long insurgency in the forested tribal districts of central and eastern India.
