New Providence
New Providence is the most populous island of the Bahamas, home of the capital Nassau. Settled from Eleuthera in the 17th century, it was repeatedly raided by the Spanish and French, and in the early 18th century became the base of the pirates' republic. Today it is the centre of the country's tourism and banking.
