Charles Vane

c. 1680–1721 · 18th century

Charles Vane was an English pirate who operated from Nassau in the Bahamas between 1716 and 1719. He refused the royal pardon brought by Governor Woodes Rogers in 1718, escaped from Nassau harbour by sending a fireship against Rogers's ships, and continued raiding. His crew deposed him in favour of Calico Jack later that year; shipwrecked and captured, he was hanged at Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1721.
