Sam Bellamy

1689–1717 · 18th century · Also known as Black Sam Bellamy

Sam Bellamy, known as Black Sam, was an English pirate who in 1716–1717 became one of the most successful raiders of the Golden Age of Piracy, operating in the Caribbean and off North America. He began under Benjamin Hornigold and in 1717 captured the slave ship Whydah, which became his flagship. Weeks later the Whydah was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod, drowning him and most of his crew; the wreck was found in 1984.
