Charles VI of France

1368–1422 · 15th century · Also known as Charles the Mad

Charles VI, called the Beloved and later the Mad, was King of France from 1380 to 1422. His recurring bouts of insanity from 1392 left power to rival princes and led to civil war between the Armagnac and Burgundian factions. Henry V of England exploited the conflict, winning at Agincourt in 1415, and by the Treaty of Troyes in 1420 Charles disinherited his son in favour of Henry.
