Nyungu ya Mawe
Nyungu ya Mawe was a Nyamwezi warlord of the 19th century in what is now western Tanzania. A member of the ruling house of Unyanyembe, he broke with his kin and the Arab traders of Tabora in the 1860s and from around 1870 used bands of ruga-ruga to conquer the Kimbu chiefdoms to the south. He ruled through appointed officials rather than hereditary chiefs, creating an unusually centralised state.
