Ossetia
Ossetia is a region of the central Caucasus inhabited by the Ossetians, an Iranian-speaking people descended from the medieval Alans. The main range of the Caucasus divides it into North Ossetia–Alania, a republic of the Russian Federation, and South Ossetia, which lies within Georgia's internationally recognised borders but has been under Russian-backed separatist control since the early 1990s.
