South Ossetia
South Ossetia is a region on the southern slopes of the central Caucasus, inhabited largely by Ossetians. Clashes there marked the Democratic Republic of Georgia in 1918–1920; it became an autonomous oblast in Soviet Georgia, broke away after the war of 1991–1992, and after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War was recognised as independent by Russia.
