South Manchuria Railway
The South Manchuria Railway Company was a Japanese semi-official company founded in 1906 to run the railway from Dairen and Port Arthur to Changchun, which Japan had taken from Russia in the Russo-Japanese War. Based at Dairen, it also ran coal mines such as Fushun, ports, hotels, towns and a large research bureau, and became the chief instrument of Japanese influence in Manchuria. A staged bombing of its line near Mukden in 1931 gave the Kwantung Army a pretext to seize the region.
