Kwantung Army

The Kwantung Army was a group of the Imperial Japanese Army stationed in north-east China from the early twentieth century. Its officers staged the Mukden Incident of 1931, which led to the occupation of Manchuria, and often acted independently of the government in Tokyo. Its insubordination illustrates the military's growing control over policy in the Empire of Japan before its defeat.
