Guadalcanal campaign

1942–1943 · 20th century · Also known as Guadalcanal · Part of the Second World War

The Guadalcanal campaign was a prolonged Allied offensive in the Solomon Islands from 1942 to 1943 during the Second World War. Fought on land, at sea and in the air, it ended with Japanese withdrawal from the island. For the Empire of Japan it was a costly defeat that marked the shift of the Pacific war towards the Allies.
