1. 10 February

   HMS Dreadnought is launched

   King Edward VII launched the battleship at Portsmouth. With ten 12-inch guns and steam turbines, she made existing battleships obsolete and intensified the naval race with Germany.

2. 18 April

   Earthquake and fire devastate San Francisco

   A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck before dawn, and fires burned for three days. Some 3,000 people died and more than half the city's population was left homeless.

3. 22 May

   Wright brothers receive their patent for a flying machine

   The US Patent Office granted Orville and Wilbur Wright patent 821,393 for their method of controlling an aircraft. They spent years defending it in the courts.

   Bambatha Rebellion

   The Bambatha Rebellion was a Zulu uprising against British rule and taxation in the Colony of Natal in 1906, sparked by a new poll tax.

   First Battle of Bud Dajo

   The First Battle of Bud Dajo, also called the Moro Crater massacre, was an American assault in March 1906 on Tausug Muslims who had taken refuge in the crater of the volcano Bud Dajo on Jolo in the southern Philippines.

   Battle of Rawdat Muhanna

   The Battle of Rawdat Muhanna was fought in April 1906 in the Qassim region of central Arabia between Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud and Abd al-Aziz ibn Mutib, emir of Jabal Shammar.

7. Revolt

   Satiru uprising

   The Satiru uprising was a Mahdist rising in 1906 at the village of Satiru near Sokoto, in the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria.
