Henrik Ibsen

1828–1906 · 19th century

Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) was a Norwegian playwright, often called the father of modern drama. After early verse dramas such as Brand and Peer Gynt, written in Italian exile, he turned to realistic prose plays that examined the morals of middle-class society, among them A Doll's House (1879), Ghosts, An Enemy of the People and Hedda Gabler. He is among the most performed dramatists in the world.
