Hebrides
The Hebrides are the islands off the west coast of Scotland, divided into the Inner Hebrides, such as Skye, Mull and Islay, and the Outer Hebrides, such as Lewis and Harris. Settled by Norse from the 9th century, they belonged to the Kingdom of the Isles under Norwegian overlordship until the Treaty of Perth of 1266 ceded them to Scotland. Gaelic language and culture remain strongest there.
