Satiru uprising

1906 · 20th century · Also known as Satiru revolt

The Satiru uprising was a Mahdist rising in 1906 at the village of Satiru near Sokoto, in the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria. The rebels destroyed a British-led company in February, but in March a larger force, supported by the Sultan of Sokoto, crushed them, killing many villagers and razing Satiru. It was the most serious challenge to British rule in the early protectorate.
