Protectorate of Northern Nigeria

1900 CE – 1914 CE · capital Zungeru

The British protectorate built on the conquest of the Sokoto Caliphate, where Frederick Lugard developed the system of indirect rule through the emirs.

Origins

On 1 January 1900 Britain took over the northern lands of the Royal Niger Company and proclaimed the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, with Frederick Lugard as high commissioner. Its capital was first Lokoja and from 1902 Zungeru. Between 1900 and 1903 British-led troops conquered the emirates, taking Kano and Sokoto in 1903.

Rule and society

With few officials and little money, Lugard governed through the emirs who accepted British authority, keeping their courts, taxes and officials under the supervision of British residents. This indirect rule, set out in his Political Memoranda, became a model for British Africa. Christian missions were restricted in Muslim areas, and Western schooling spread slowly. A revolt at Satiru in 1906 was crushed.

Decline and legacy

Lugard returned as governor of both protectorates in 1912 and merged them on 1 January 1914 into Colonial Nigeria. The north remained a separate administrative region, and the legacy of separate development shaped Nigerian politics.
