First Battle of Bud Dajo

1906 · 20th century · Also known as Moro Crater massacre, Bud Dajo massacre · Part of the Moro Rebellion

The First Battle of Bud Dajo, also called the Moro Crater massacre, was an American assault in March 1906 on Tausug Muslims who had taken refuge in the crater of the volcano Bud Dajo on Jolo in the southern Philippines. Of some 800 to 1,000 people in the crater, including many women and children, only a handful survived. It was among the bloodiest episodes of the American conquest of the Philippines and drew criticism in the United States.
