Sulu Archipelago
The Sulu Archipelago is a chain of islands in the south-western Philippines, stretching between Mindanao and Borneo and including Jolo, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi. From the 15th century it was the heart of the Sultanate of Sulu, a Muslim maritime state that traded and raided across the region. Spain and then the United States struggled to control it, and it remains largely Muslim, inhabited mainly by the Tausug, Sama and Yakan peoples.
