OVRA

1927–1945 · 20th century

The OVRA was the secret political police of Fascist Italy, organised from 1927 under the Ministry of the Interior while Arturo Bocchini was chief of police. It ran a large network of informers that watched and arrested opponents of the regime, many of whom were sent to internal exile (confino). The meaning of its name was never officially explained and was probably chosen to sound menacing.
