Oyo Mesi
The Oyo Mesi was the council of seven hereditary chiefs, headed by the Basorun, that constrained the power of the Alaafin, the king of Oyo. Its collective authority could compel an Alaafin to abdicate. The crisis under Basorun Gaa damaged the council's legitimacy and created lasting mistrust within the Oyo Empire.
