Oyo-Ile

Also known as Old Oyo, Katunga

Oyo-Ile, also called Old Oyo or Katunga, was the capital of the Oyo Empire, located on open savannah in present-day north-western Nigeria. Its setting enabled the horse-based military culture on which Oyo's expansion depended. It was reconquered under Alaafin Abipa around 1610 and abandoned around 1835–1836.
