Kingdom of Dahomey
The Kingdom of Dahomey was a West African kingdom centred on Abomey in present-day Benin, known for its centralised monarchy and its role in the Atlantic slave trade. In the eighteenth century it was forced to pay tribute to the Oyo Empire after repeated Oyo cavalry invasions. It later freed itself from Oyo's overlordship and was conquered by France in the 1890s.
