Abomey
Abomey is a town in southern Benin, the capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey from the seventeenth century until 1894. Each king built his own palace there, and the Royal Palaces of Abomey, with their painted clay bas-reliefs recording the kingdom's history, were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Behanzin burned much of the town before the French entered it in November 1892.
