Palayakkarar
The Palayakkarar, known in English as Poligars and in Kannada as Palegars, were military chiefs of south India who held territories called palayams under the Vijayanagara Empire and its successor Nayaka states in return for military service and tribute. Many, such as the Nayakas of Chitradurga, became virtually independent rulers in the 17th and 18th centuries. The British East India Company subdued the last of them in the Poligar Wars of 1799–1805.
