Vijayanagara Empire

c. 1336 · 14th century

The Vijayanagara Empire was a powerful Hindu state in southern India founded around 1336, with its capital at Vijayanagara on the Tungabhadra River. It arose as Delhi Sultanate control over the Deccan and the south weakened. Accounts of the Delhi Sultanate treat its emergence as a sign of the sultanate's decline, and it dominated much of southern India until its defeat in 1565.
