Peterborough

Also known as Medeshamstede

Peterborough is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, England, on the River Nene. It grew around the abbey of Medeshamstede, founded in the mid-7th century under Mercian royal patronage, destroyed by the Danes around 870 and refounded in the 10th century as Peterborough Abbey. Its Norman abbey church became a cathedral in 1541, and a monk there continued the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle into the 12th century.
