Peterborough Abbey

Also known as Medeshamstede

Peterborough Abbey was a Benedictine monastery in eastern England, founded around 655 as Medeshamstede in the time of Peada of the Middle Angles. Destroyed by Danes in the 9th century and refounded in the 10th, it continued the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle until 1154. Its church became Peterborough Cathedral in 1541, where Catherine of Aragon is buried.
