Pfaffenbrief

1370 · 14th century · Also known as Priests' Charter

The Pfaffenbrief, or Priests' Charter, was an agreement of 1370 between Zürich, Lucerne, Zug, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. It required clergy and other residents to bring secular disputes before local courts rather than church or foreign courts, and it protected the safety of roads. It was one of the first common laws of the Swiss Confederates.
