Pfalzgrafenstein Castle

1327 · 14th century

Pfalzgrafenstein Castle is a toll castle on a small island in the Rhine near Kaub, Germany. Louis IV the Bavarian built its tower in 1326–1327 to collect river tolls, and a surrounding curtain wall was added soon after. It remained a toll station of the counts palatine and their successors into the nineteenth century, and is now part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site.
