Poland Is Not Yet Lost

written between 16 and 19 July 1797 · 1st century · Also known as Mazurek Dąbrowskiego

In 1795 the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned for the third time by Russia, Prussia and Austria and erased from the map; the partitioning monarchs pledged never to use the name "Poland" in their titles. Many, even leaders of the Polish Enlightenment, took it as the end of the nation: Hugo Kołłątaj wrote that Poland "no longer belonged to currently extant nations".
