Policarpo Toro
Policarpo Toro was a Chilean naval officer who annexed Easter Island (Rapa Nui) for Chile. After visiting the island in 1870 and urging its acquisition, he bought land there from foreign owners and on 9 September 1888 signed an agreement of cession with the ariki Atamu Tekena and other chiefs. Chile later leased most of the island to a company for sheep ranching.
