Jacob Roggeveen

1659–1729 · 18th century

Jacob Roggeveen was a Dutch explorer sent by the Dutch West India Company to search for the supposed southern continent. On Easter Day, 5 April 1722, his ships reached a Pacific island he named Easter Island, the first known European visit to Rapa Nui. He then sailed on through the Tuamotus and Samoa, but his ships were seized at Batavia by the rival Dutch East India Company.
