Pope Sixtus V

1521–1590 · 16th century · Also known as Felice Peretti

Sixtus V was pope from 1585 to 1590. In his short reign he suppressed banditry in the Papal States, built up the papal treasury, and in 1588 reorganised the Curia into fifteen permanent congregations of cardinals. He also replanned Rome with new straight streets linking its great basilicas, brought water to the city by the Acqua Felice aqueduct, and completed the dome of St Peter's.
