Pope Sixtus IV

1414–1484 · 15th century · Also known as Francesco della Rovere

Pope Sixtus IV reigned from 1471 to 1484. He built the Sistine Chapel and refounded the Vatican Library, but was notorious for advancing his nephews, among them Girolamo Riario, for whom he acquired Imola and Forlì. His family's hostility to the Medici lay behind the Pazzi conspiracy of 1478.
