Prince Louis of Battenberg

1854–1921 · 19th century · Also known as Louis Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven

Prince Louis of Battenberg was a German-born British admiral of the Hessian Battenberg family. He joined the Royal Navy in 1868 and became First Sea Lord in 1912, but resigned in 1914 because of anti-German feeling. In 1917 he gave up his German titles, took the name Mountbatten and became Marquess of Milford Haven; he was the father of Louis Mountbatten.
