Providence Island Company

1630–1641 · 17th century

The Providence Island Company was an English joint-stock company chartered in 1630 by Puritan nobles and gentry, including the Earl of Warwick, Lord Saye and Sele and John Pym. It founded a Puritan colony on Providence Island off the coast of Central America, which also became a base for privateering against Spain. The Spanish captured the island in 1641, and the company's network later formed part of the parliamentary opposition to Charles I.
