Ptolemy VIII Physcon

c. 182–116 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Also known as Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II

Ptolemy VIII, nicknamed Physcon, was a Ptolemaic king who quarrelled for decades with his brother Ptolemy VI. In 163 BCE Rome settled the dispute by giving him Cyrenaica as a separate kingdom. After his brother's death in 145 BCE he became king of Egypt, reigning until 116 BCE amid conflict with his sister and wife Cleopatra II.
