Pyidawtha
Pyidawtha, meaning 'happy, prosperous land', was the welfare-state programme of U Nu's government in Burma, launched in 1952. Drawn up with American economic consultants, it planned investment in industry, agriculture, health, education and housing, financed largely by rice exports. Falling rice prices and continuing insurgency left most of its targets unmet.
