Person
Rajiv Gandhi
Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989, succeeding his mother, Indira Gandhi, after her assassination and leading the Congress to a record election victory. He promoted telecommunications and computing and began cautious economic liberalisation, but his government was damaged by the Bofors arms scandal and the costly intervention of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka. He was assassinated by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber at Sriperumbudur in 1991.
