Red Cloud's War

1866–1868 · 19th century

Red Cloud's War was a conflict of 1866–1868 between the United States and an alliance of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho led by the Oglala chief Red Cloud. It was fought over the Bozeman Trail and the army forts guarding it in the Powder River country of Wyoming and Montana, and included the Fetterman Fight of December 1866. The United States abandoned the forts and signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868.
