Person
Richard II of England
Richard II was King of England from 1377 to 1399, succeeding his grandfather Edward III at the age of ten. As a boy of fourteen he faced the rebels of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381. His later reign was marked by conflict with the great nobles, several of whom he struck down in 1397, and in 1399 his exiled cousin Henry Bolingbroke returned, deposed him and took the throne as Henry IV. Richard died in captivity at Pontefract Castle early in 1400.
