Robert Boyle

1627–1691 · 17th century

Robert Boyle was an Anglo-Irish chemist, physicist and theologian, regarded as one of the founders of modern chemistry. He studied the properties of air with a pump built by Robert Hooke and in 1662 published Boyle's law: at a constant temperature, the volume of a gas varies inversely with its pressure. For him chemistry, the subject of his Sceptical Chymist (1661), was the science of the composition of substances. Named to the council of the Royal Society in its charter of 1663, he left money in his will for lectures defending Christianity.
