Rogvolod

d. c. 978 · 10th century · Also known as Rogvolod of Polotsk

Rogvolod was a 10th-century ruler of Polotsk and the first prince of the town named in the Rus' chronicles, which say he had come 'from overseas', probably from Scandinavia. When he refused the suit of Vladimir of Novgorod for his daughter Rogneda, Vladimir captured Polotsk around 978, killed Rogvolod and his sons and took Rogneda as his wife. His descendants through her later ruled Polotsk.
