Rudolf I of Burgundy

c. 859–912 · 9th century

Rudolf I, of the Welf family, was the first king of Upper Burgundy. After the fall of the emperor Charles the Fat in 888 he was crowned at the abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune, ruling the lands between the Jura and the Pennine Alps around Lake Geneva. He failed in his attempt to win Lotharingia but kept his kingdom, which passed to his son Rudolf II.
