Charles the Fat

881–888 CE · 9th century

Charles the Fat was a Carolingian ruler who briefly reunited the realms of the Carolingian Empire between 881 and 888 CE. His reign was undermined when he paid tribute to the Vikings besieging Paris rather than fight them. He was deposed shortly before his death, and the empire fragmented permanently.
