Charles the Child

c. 847–866 · 9th century · Also known as Charles of Aquitaine

Charles the Child was a son of the West Frankish king Charles the Bald, who made him king of Aquitaine in 855 to win the Aquitanian nobility away from the rival Pippin II. His rule was contested and largely nominal, and he rebelled against his father in the early 860s. He died in 866 from the effects of a head wound received in a quarrel, and Aquitaine passed to his brother Louis the Stammerer.
