Sack of Rome (1527)

1527 · 16th century · Part of the War of the League of Cognac

The Sack of Rome took place on 6 May 1527, when mutinous and unpaid troops of Emperor Charles V, including German Landsknechte and Spanish soldiers, stormed the city during the War of the League of Cognac. Pope Clement VII took refuge in Castel Sant'Angelo and later surrendered, while the soldiers looted and killed for months. In Florence the pope's weakness allowed the citizens to expel the Medici and restore the republic.
